Preparing for a Kambo Ceremony: What You Need to Know
Preparation is one of the most important parts of a kambo session. How you approach the days and hours before makes a real difference to how the ceremony goes and how you feel afterward. This page covers everything you need to know.
TL;DR: Fast for at least 12 hours, avoid alcohol for 48 hours, drink a little water but stop all fluid intake two hours before. Wear loose clothing and take some time to think about what you want from the session. That is it.

What is kambo and how does it work?
Kambo is a secretion from the Phyllomedusa bicolor, a tree frog from the Amazon. It is applied to the skin via small burns and absorbed quickly through the lymphatic system. The process is intensely physical and lasts 20 to 40 minutes. Kambo is not psychedelic and you remain fully conscious throughout the session.

Preparing for your kambo ceremony
Step 1. Follow a light diet
At least 24 to 48 hours before your session, eat clean and light. Steamed vegetables, soups, fruits, quinoa, legumes, and avocado are all good choices. Avoid very spicy, fatty, processed, or oily food. Avoid meat, chicken, and fish on the day of your session and for a few days afterward.
Step 2. Fast
Do not eat anything for at least 12 hours before your session. An empty stomach is essential for the process to move cleanly and safely.
Step 3. Manage your fluid intake
Stop all fluid intake two hours before the session. In the morning you may drink a small amount of herbal tea or water, but avoid coffee as caffeine stimulates the system. Do not add honey to anything you drink as it can disrupt your electrolyte balance. Avoid alcohol and drugs for 48 hours before and after your session.
Step 4. Set an intention
Before your session, take some time to think about why you are coming to kambo. What do you want to change, release, or understand? Whether your reasons are physical, emotional, or energetic, a clear intention helps anchor the experience. You do not need a perfectly formed intention. Even a simple, honest question is enough.
Step 5. Understand the experience
A kambo session can be intense but is short, typically 20 to 40 minutes. You may experience nausea, sweating, and vomiting as the body cleanses itself. This is part of the process and passes relatively quickly. It is completely normal to feel nervous before a session.
What to bring
Wear loose comfortable clothing that you can move in easily. Sleeveless tops are preferable as they make it easier to apply the medicine. Bring a layer in case you feel cold during or after the session.
Bring the following to your session:
A blanket, shawl, or something warm to rest under afterward
A hair clip or elastic if you have long hair
Remove contact lenses before the session
If you have asthma, bring your inhaler as a precaution
A notebook and pen if you want to write anything down afterward
How long to set aside
The active phase of a kambo session lasts 20 to 40 minutes. Set aside two to three hours in total for preparation, the ceremony, and rest time afterward. If possible, keep the rest of the day free from work or other commitments. Kambo is not mind-altering and you can drive after a short rest.
Aftercare and integration
After your session it is important to rest, stay hydrated, and nourish your body with simple healthy food. Journaling, meditation, and gentle movement like walking can help integrate the experience. Kambo often continues to work in the days that follow.
You can read more about how to make the most of the time after your session on the post-kambo integration page.
